Special care for DJ files

  • The version stays. Remixes and edits keep their name.
  • DJ pool endings understood. Tempo, key and codes leave the title.
  • The artist in the filename counts.
  • Cues, beat grids, crates and sets stay.

Even recognises classical music.

Besides pop, rock and electronic music, classical recordings too. Recognised by their sound, suggested field by field.

  • Work titles with catalogue numbers. BWV, KV, op.
  • Orchestra and conductor. As the recording names them.
  • The cover of the recording. Not just any cover.

Questions and answers

The questions that always come up.

Answered briefly.

Apple Music and iTunes

Which libraries does Truffle work with?

Your Apple Music library (formerly iTunes), folders on disk, and the collections of rekordbox, Serato and Traktor. Your files stay where they are: Truffle moves nothing and renames nothing.

Why does Apple Music show the wrong cover, or none at all, for some albums?

Usually the picture is missing from the file, or the tracks of an album disagree on album or album artist. Truffle suggests covers up to 1000 px and brings the details into line. More in the guide to album artwork.

How do I find duplicate tracks in my library?

Truffle recognises duplicates by title, artist, album and length and marks them. The file stays on your Mac, and nothing is deleted without asking you first. How to do it with the Music app alone is in the guide to duplicates.

Why does Apple Music split my album into several albums?

Because its tracks differ in album or album artist, often by just a space or a “feat.”. Album coherence finds such albums and shows you the changes as a list first. Every change can be undone. More in the guide to metadata in Apple Music.

Can I make genres consistent, like “Hip Hop” and “Hip-Hop”?

Yes. In Bulk edit (⌘B) you find and replace across all selected tracks, and the preview shows every line first. The way to do it in the Music app is in the guide to genre and year.

Why does Apple Music show a newer year for old tracks?

Often the track carries the year of the reissue or remaster, not the year of the original. Truffle suggests the year for each track and writes it only after you confirm. Every change can be undone. More in the guide to genre and year.

Does Truffle work with iCloud Music Library?

Yes. Tracks that are only in iCloud are marked by Truffle with an iCloud symbol. Truffle writes changed details to your library through the Music app.

My file is just called “Track” and a number. Can Truffle still identify the track?

Often, yes. Even when the file gives nothing away, Truffle recognises the track by its sound and suggests title, artist and album. You confirm every field before anything is written.

Does Truffle help with an old iTunes library from the CD days?

That is what it is built for: ripped CDs without covers, garbled accents, albums spelled three different ways. Truffle compares eight sources and makes one suggestion per field.

What about tracks from the Apple Music subscription?

Streamed tracks are not files on your Mac. Truffle recognises them, excludes them from editing and tells you why in the list.

Can I change many tracks at once?

Yes. Select the tracks and open Bulk edit (⌘B). There you set one field to the same value for all of them, find and replace, regular expressions included, or change the capitalisation. The preview shows every line before Truffle writes anything.

What does Truffle do with inconsistent albums?

Album coherence finds tracks of one album that disagree and sorts the changes by kind: missing album artist, different spelling, missing year, compilation without its checkmark, missing cover. You see each kind in a list first. Albums with several years you go through one by one, because on best-ofs that is often intended.

For DJs

Does Truffle touch my DJ program’s database?

No. Truffle writes into the audio files, never into the database of rekordbox, Serato or Traktor. Cues, loops, beat grids, crates and sets stay as they are; the program re-reads the tags.

Does Truffle measure tempo and key?

Yes. Your Mac measures both itself, from the audio, without the internet. Above about 130 BPM, the tempo is an approximation. Truffle writes tempo and key into the file only when you explicitly click to do so. More in the guide to BPM and key.

Do my cues and beatgrids stay intact?

Yes. Truffle never writes into the database of rekordbox, Serato or Traktor. With Serato, cues and loops live in the file itself; Truffle writes around them.

What happens to remixes and edits?

The version stays. Remixes and edits keep their name, so you find the right one in your set.

Does Truffle understand track titles from DJ pools?

Yes. Truffle recognises endings with tempo, key and pool code and takes them out of the title.

How does Truffle read my Traktor collection?

From collection.nml, with the collection and playlists. Truffle writes the tags into the files; grids and cues stay untouched.

Switching and alternatives

Is there Mp3tag for Mac?

Yes, Mp3tag is now also available in the Mac App Store; it edits files in folders. Truffle is made for the library in Apple Music and also works with folders. There is an overview in the guide to Mp3tag for Mac.

How is Truffle different from MusicBrainz Picard?

Picard is free, open source and fills in tags in files from the MusicBrainz database. Truffle works on your Apple Music library, compares eight sources and shows one suggestion per field, along with its source. More in the overview of tag editors.

Isn’t the Music app’s Info window enough?

For a few tracks, yes. With a large library, it lacks a preview, a check and a way back. What the Music app can do on its own is in the guide to metadata in Apple Music.

Can I try Truffle on a folder first?

Yes. Truffle works on the Apple Music library or only on folders of local files that you choose. That way you see on a few tracks how it works.

Purchase, data, Mac

Is it really a one-time purchase?

Yes. €59.99 once, as an in-app purchase in the Mac App Store. No subscription, updates at no extra cost, on every Mac signed in with your Apple Account.

What can I try before buying?

Everything. The app is a free download, analyses 100 tracks and writes 20, in total, with no feature locked. If that is enough for you, it stays free. If you want more, you unlock the full version.

Can I undo a change?

Yes. The history knows every change and restores it, one by one or as a whole session. Before Truffle writes a file, it backs up the original. Only deleting is not taken back, and deleting is yours alone.

Do I need an account or an internet connection?

No account with us; the purchase runs through your Apple Account in the Mac App Store. Truffle needs the internet for the catalogues and for audio recognition, and each of these sources can be switched off. Tempo and key your Mac measures itself, with no network at all.

Which data leaves my Mac?

Only what a lookup needs: the metadata of the track you are checking, and for audio recognition a short fingerprint of the audio. No telemetry, no advertising, no tracking. The details are in the privacy policy.

Is Truffle safe?

Truffle has no account, no telemetry, no ads and no tracking. It only changes the tags inside your music files, and nothing is written until you confirm it. Every change can be undone; only deleting cannot.

Which file formats does Truffle know?

17 file extensions, from mp3 via m4a and flac to aiff and wav. What Truffle does not know, it leaves untouched.

Which Mac do I need?

A Mac with Apple Silicon and macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later. Truffle comes from the Mac App Store and runs in the macOS sandbox.

Is Truffle available for Windows or Android?

No, only for the Mac. Truffle recognises tracks by their sound, using Apple’s Shazam recognition (ShazamKit), and that does not exist for Windows. And the library Truffle tidies up does not live on your phone. So a Windows or Android version is not planned.

Can I use Truffle on more than one Mac?

Yes, on every Mac with your Apple Account. The purchase goes through the Mac App Store.

Which languages is Truffle available in?

The app and the website are available in 20 languages.
