Fix Wrong or Missing Album Artwork in Apple Music
An album with no picture, an album showing the artwork of a completely different album, or an album split across several tiles with different pictures: in libraries that have grown over the years, this is everyday stuff. Usually the picture itself isn't the problem. The problem is the information the Music app uses to recognise an album.
Let Apple find the artwork
The Music app can look for missing artwork on its own:
- Select an album or several tracks in your library.
- Right-click and choose “Get Album Artwork”.
- You need to be signed in with your Apple Account for this. The app sends information about the tracks without artwork to Apple.
This works well for albums Apple knows. For CDs you ripped yourself, live recordings or rare editions, the app often finds nothing, or the wrong picture.
Set the artwork yourself
- Select all tracks of the album and choose “Get Info”.
- In the “Artwork” tab, add a picture or drag one in from the Finder.
- The app asks whether you really want to change the artwork for multiple items. After that, every selected track carries the same picture.
Use a square image of a decent size. A small thumbnail from the web quickly looks washed out on large screens.
Why the wrong artwork keeps coming back
The Music app distinguishes between downloaded artwork and artwork embedded in the file. “Clear Downloaded Artwork” only removes the downloaded kind; a picture inside the file itself stays. So if you keep seeing the same wrong picture, it is often in the file.
With iCloud Music Library there is a second reason: your library is synced between your devices, and an old picture can come back along the way. Choose “File” > “Library” > “Update Cloud Library” to start the sync again.
When an album falls apart into several tiles
If an album shows several tiles with different pictures, its tracks don't agree on Album or Album Artist. A single space, a different spelling or a “feat.” in the album artist is enough. Make these fields match in the “Details” tab, then set the artwork once for all tracks.
What Truffle takes off your hands
Truffle goes through your library track by track, compares eight sources and suggests one value per field, including artwork up to 1000 px. Each suggestion stands on its own, nothing is written until you confirm, and every change you apply can be undone. The app is free to try: analyse 100 tracks, write 20, no feature locked.
